#GetReal about how you feel
This week marks the 70th annual Mental Health Week hosted by the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA). This year’s theme is "Understanding our Emotions." #GetReal about how you feel!
This theme is especially relevant this year, as we all cope with the effects of COVID-19. It’s been a tough year for many. If you are struggling more than usual – experiencing heightened anxiety, sadness or loneliness – that’s completely normal.
All emotions are a normal part of the human experience, and it’s important to recognize them. Heavy feelings can lighten when you put them into words.
Did you know that there is scientific evidence that sharing your negative emotions can actually make you feel better? Many of us avoid sharing our negative emotions, because it makes us feel uncomfortable and vulnerable, or because we think that talking about our emotions will give them power over us. The science says otherwise: that our response to emotions can actually change the activity in our brains, and ultimately make us feel calmer!
Being honest with others about our feelings also has the potential to deepen our relationships with friends and family. Relationships are key to weathering this pandemic together, through mutual care and support.
Mindfulness is one approach people use to better understand their emotions and reactions. You can learn more about Mindfulness by accessing our free online video series with practitioner Sanjeev Kumar. TIES has also launched a Mindfulness app that you can download on your mobile device (TIES Mindfulness). The app leads you through mindfulness exercises and courses. Check back on our webpage for information about our free Mindfulness and Mental Wellness Conference to be held virtually June 24, 2021.
If you are going through tough times and need support, help is available. Access counselling through our Healthy Minds program, or check out the supports offered by the Government of Alberta.
This week, and every week, acknowledge your emotions. Name it, don’t numb it.
